Guide To Gaining Recognition

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 13, 2006, 2:30 PM
:bulletgreen: How To Get Seen! :bulletgreen:
Yes, this is a long awaited and important part of the UnseenArtists group. This is a definitive guide to educate all of UnA's members as to the many ways of getting more recognition through this group and through DA in general. Members can also add to this guide. If you're a member and you have a method to get your work seen that is not mentioned here already, feel free to post it as a comment to this page. Together we can all make this page as comprehensive and useful as possible!

:star: Tips for Using UnA!: :star:
As a member of UnseenArtists you have various methods of sharing your work through this group. Here is a detailed list of all the ways in which you can do so.

:bulletred: The #1 thing to remember before you even begin to read all of this is that comments, pageviews, faves, devwatches, ect. are nothing unless you have respect for yourself and others. This means that you must be honest and genuine towards your work and the work of other DA members. You have to really care to network with people and make friends, not just for a selfish goal of gaining popularity and having more pageviews than Joe. Popularity means nothing if you only work to please others rather than for yourself. The goal of all artists is to learn from others and get better at what we do in hopes that we can all be viewed and respected as unique talented individuals. With that said please read on!

:bulletred: Use the #UnseenArtists chatroom to post unlimited thumbnails of your work (within allowance of the rules). If people in the chat like what they see there's a good chance they will click on your work and get a better look. If they really like it they may fave it, or even devwatch you!

:bulletred: In the chatroom you have a chance to network with fellow artists. Don't be shy! By talking to people about common interests and art you can make valuable friends who will most likely support your work and look at it often. You may also meet artists who inspire you to try new things. The more friends you make, the more pageviews, faves, comments, devwatches, and fame you claim!

:bulletred: The Art Submission Policy of UnA is always changing due to the large numbers of people that are now in this group, so admittedly it is not as effective as it used to be in terms of displaying art from each of you members. However, the changes made see to it that art submissions continue to be a part of UnA. Having your art be posted into UnA's gallery is like having a second chance for your art to be on DA's main page again, which usually results in new people seeing your work and faving it if they really like it. Also a lot of people check out UnA's gallery since it contains a wide variety of art from all different people, mediums, and styles. Please read the rules regarding art submitting on the Rules page!

:bulletred: If you have a difficult time getting art into UnA's gallery (usually because I am too busy to submit or I have too much to submit), you are welcomed to use UnA's forum to post links to your art, have conversations about various topics related to your work, UnA, or DA in general. The more people use the forum, the more networking will take place! It's all about making connections.

:bulletred: I love receiving art or writing dedicated to my group, so all members are encouraged and welcomed to do art dedicated to UnA. If you do, send it to me in a note and I will post it as a thumbnail in the Honorable Mentions Page! Having a thumb of your art on UnA guarantees a lot of views on your piece as well as possible faves, ect. It does work!

:bulletred: If you get a Daily Deviation please let me know and I will post it up as a thumb in the Honorable Mentions Page, where it may be seen even more by UnA's members!

:star: Tips for Using DeviantArt!: :star:
As a member of DeviantArt you have various methods of sharing your work through this site as a whole. Here is a detailed list of all the ways in which you can do so.

:bulletred: Pick an easy name to remember, nice and short, and for some reason, more people will look at you.

:bulletred: There are many tiny details about gaining recognition on DA. It's a fine mixture of talent, care, respect, appreciation, and time. Firstly, submitting art is a major perk of this site, so submit work that you feel you put your heart into or that you really like. Anything else can go into scraps. Do what makes you feel fulfilled as an artist, not what others expect to see. This gives your work meaning and is more likely to gain some attention.

:bulletred: When people comment on your work or give you constructive criticism, always reply back. "Thank you" means a lot to people. They want to know that you appreciate the fact they took the time to comment on your work. And constructive criticism can only make you better as artists, so do try new things if they are suggested to you and thank the people who cared enough to help you improve.

:bulletred: Commenting others is equally important as replying to comments you receive! If you like someone's work then tell them so! Also if you put thought into your comments and don't just say "nice pic" all the time, you will gain their attention. Show you care by telling them what aspects of their work you really like or what you get out of it. Does it inspire you at all? Also, if you see room for improvement don't be shy, let them know what aspects of their work you feel could be stronger. By helping them out they will know you are a valuable friend on DA and they will do the same for you.

:bulletred: Favoriting art of people shows them that you really love their work. It also helps to comment on the work you fave and let the artists know why you love it so much. This is a great way to make friends and help others find the art you fave since it is displayed on your page.

:bulletred: Always thank people who fave your own art!

:bulletred: Explore DA! There are a lot of talented people on this site waiting to be discovered by you. Look at your friend's faves, look at the people who fave you, look at people who devwatch you and comment you, check out the chatrooms and forums, and click deviations you see and like that show up on the main page when you enter DA. People who are subscribed to DA and have the feature to show visitors will see that you looked at their page and they may check you out too! Don't forget to fave, devwatch, and comment all the artists you like, they may just have to check you out ^^

:bulletred: Devwatch people who you really like! And thank them if they devwatch you!

:bulletred: Post comments on people's front pages. Tell them what you think overall of their page or their art, or simply stop by to say hi and let them know you care.

:bulletred: Reply to all comments you get on your page!

:bulletred: Send people notes to tell them what you think of their work or even asking them how they do something you really like, wish to try, or learn. Artists appreciate people who take the time to ask them questions and show interest in their process.

:bulletred: DA is loaded with forums, so use them! The Thumbshare forum is great because there are many themes that you can post your work under. You can even make your own! Just be sure to respect people's rules about posting thumbs and commenting. If they are generous enough to look at your work and comment, do the same for them. For other forums you can make friends and discuss various topics which can also lead to more connections.

:bulletred: Use the chatrooms! DA has a wide variety of chatrooms for all different themes. You can make friends in chatrooms very easily as long as you follow the rules of whatever chat you are in and don't spam or start trouble. Some chats don't allow thumbsharing so also be aware of that. When you're in a chat feel free to check out the pages of people you see in there, you may find an artist you really like! The other benefit of being in a chat is that people may want to look at your page.

:bulletred: If a DA chat allows thumbsharing then post your art as their rules permit, and also say a little something about your work. People tend to look at work that they know something about. If you tell them how much effort you put into it, or what you struggled to achieve, or even just ask for constructive criticism, you'll likely have people take a look at your work. Just remember, people hate spam and flooding of art so post within reason! And avoid being too egotistical about your work. Others may want you to look at their work too.

:bulletred: This is a method that some people swear by, so for their sake I will post it. There are a few deviants on DA who are extremely popular, with tons of pageviews, ect. Try finding a popular deviant whose work you genuinely like and comment and fave them as much as you like. Often you will not receive any replies, but your comments will be on their page so all who look will see you and may check you out. It's not guaranteed.

:bulletred: If you are lucky and you get a Daily Deviation you will get many comments, pageviews, faves, and devwatches. Just don't let the temporary fame go to your head and be sure to thank everyone who cared for your work!

:bulletred: In your profile you can add a signature to advertise yourself. Everywhere you comment this will show up so use it wisely ^^

:bulletred: Having a journal and keeping a nice front page will help attract visitors, so for those of you willing to take the time to beautify your pages, it's worth the effort. If you get a subscription to DA you can even have banners, stamps, and thumbnails on your journal to add to the overall look. Having an ID also helps people get a feel for who you are. If you are unsure as to how to beautify your main page DA has a lot of tips regarding html codes for text ect. in their help guides.

:bulletred: Join a club or two or a million! Clubs are fun to be a part of and share your artwork in. It's a great way to meet fellow deviants who share common interests with you, so be sure to make contacts!

:bulletred: Make your own club! Hey, it's a lot of work but it's well worth it ^^ People will love you for it if you make a good club for them to be a part of!

:bulletred: Make your own chatroom! Again, people will enjoy your chat if you work hard to make it great.

:bulletred: Lastly, it takes some natural talent or struggle to create art or writing that people will want to see. If you do work that seems lack luster or careless people will not want to see it. Art is for yourself above all, not everyone will like what you do, but never stop striving to improve! The better you get the more people will like your work.

That's all of my input! I hope to see lots of comments with more ideas ^^ Thank you all for reading and good luck with gaining recognition on DA and in UnA!

Sincerely,

If you want to get noticed by other people, the first thing you should do is introduce yourself. It doesn't matter if you're the best artist on here or not, introduce yourself and make friends and there's guaranteed to be at LEAST a few people that like your art.

how i do it: go to ur friend's sites and look at the watchers list, view the watchers' pages, if u find one u like, add em and comment on their artwork, and then view that watcher's watchers, and if u find one u like there, add them, and continue doing this. u'll be surprised how quickly u get friends and are noticed ^_^
-basically it's a long chain of finding people through other people. and u find other artists that aren't so popularly known on DA but are really talented.

ok ur gonna have to face it some time...sometimes ur the pigeon and other days ur the statue. so learn how to cope. bring an unbrella.

Method #2: Don't be needy and selfish.

Nothing puts people off more than someone who goes around and only types "me, me, go see my gallery/my artwork, me, me". There's other people too.

if you want the coolest friends, look at people's favourates. people don't just fav anything they see. talk to people who get a lot of favourates and you can get big connections with popular dA people and may even get noticed that way.

Be nice, polite, treat others as you would like to be treated, be honest, dont kiss ass, be honest to yourself, do things you love not the things that you think others will love since they will hate it, there is nothing worse than pleasing others, always reply to all comments you receive, thank for all watches and +favs, be helpfull, friendly, dont be selfish, do not whine and whinge, if you want to achieve something have faith to what is within you and go for it, popularity comes and goes, sometimes one good comment is way better than 1000 wows, knowing that your work touched someone is more important than 10k pageviews or even a DD.

Also I find that:

1.Look through your gallery and do a "clean out". Put the things that you feel are no longer represent the strives you made in your art into storage. And only submit the things YOU know you've put your time , effort and heart into.

2. The thumbshare forum is your friend! I started using it when I had around 1500 hits on my page then the number went to 2500 because I became more active in dA's community and tried to learn from the comments and critiques I was receiving .

3.Also , I find people really appreciate it if you give a simple "thank you" for their comments , especially when people take the time to let you know what you've done well and what you may need to work on in your art .
